It’s great to imagine what your remodel will look like when it’s done. It’s also wonderful to begin the brainstorming for the remodel and think of all the possibilities that are before you. This, of course, is very different when the remodel begins, or when you are in the middle of the remodel and you wonder if and when it is ever going to be done so that you can get back to your life. It’s easy to imagine that in the middle of the remodel you would begin to question your sanity, and why you bothered to start this in the beginning. One way to reduce the stress of a remodel is to properly prepare. This post will help you do that using a kitchen remodel as an example. Here’s how you survive a remodel.

Determine Essentials

If you are remodeling your kitchen, you will need to determine what will still be used during the remodel, what will need to be stored, and anything that will be no longer needed. If you are replacing the sink, you will need to figure out a temporary place to wash your dishes and store items, so they don’t interfere with the work. Setting up a work area/food prep area and clean up area will help control the chaos that can come with a remodel.

Pet Safety

It is essential while work is being done on the house that pets remain safe and outside of the work zone. If pets normally eat in the kitchen then re-directing them to their new food place might take a few tries. Pets become creatures of habit so make finding the new food place fun to ease some of the stress. Additionally, move treats, toys and anything else your pet might go after far away from the construction zone. You want to take away the attraction of the work area without adding stress to the pet’s day.

Clear A Path

Consider the path the construction traffic will take while work is being done, during set up and when take down happens. You want to make sure that anything you don’t want to be scratched, dented or broken is moved. If there are trip or fall hazards, they are brought to attention and attended to. If there are children present, you want to stress to them how important it is to pick up toys and make sure there is nothing left in the way.

All of the tips will help you survive a remodel.
