You can begin your remodel with the best of intentions and little things begin to crop up that make you need to adjust your choices. It’s important during this time to remain aware of what you had decided, and what would be a good alternative.  Here are some tips and points for you to consider when remodeling an area of your home.

Get A Sample

When you look at things in the store it is important to remember that the store might not have the same lighting as your house. If you look at paint at the store then bring it home you could see that it looks completely different or “off” when you use it on the walls. Get a paint sample, or several, and tape them up to get a feel for what the actual color would look like on the actual wall it is being used. Additionally, some stores will have wood samples too. Again, this is important to look at under your lighting. Think of the difference between white and cream under different light settings, as an example.

See Things Put Together

When you are deciding on cabinetry you can choose the wood and the hardware. See if you can see your choices together before they are put up. Also, if one of your choices is unavailable then see what your new choice looks like when it’s completed. You might like both pieces individually but realize when they are together, they just don’t work.  Or those pieces work together, but they don’t go with the décor that is not changing.

Follow Your Instincts

Sometimes when you are working on a remodel your friends and family can offer advice about what is “good” for your home. You can listen to what they have to say, but remember that this remodel is yours not theirs. You need to live with the choices that you make.  You can thank them for their thoughts, take it under advisement, and then choose what you think is best.

When Things Go Wrong

If something happens during the remodel you should take a minute and step back before making more decisions. You do not want to end up making costlier decisions because you feel you need stay within your time frame. Make sure the choices that you make are well thought out. Sometimes things just happen, and it is during these times where rash decisions should not be made.
