One of the biggest trends in bathrooms right now is the freestanding tub. In the past, there was talk about Jacuzzis and whirlpools as the place to relax after a long day. Or even taking a trip to the spa. What the freestanding tub can do is give you the relaxation and spa-like oasis in the comfort of your bathroom. A freestanding tub is accessible from all sides (depending upon placement) so there is ease in cleaning and entering the tub. These tubs can become show pieces and focal points to the bathroom, so they are a way to truly show off your style as well.

Material/Design/Color

It seems for freestanding tubs that the decorative options are endless. One thing to keep in mind is to consider the amount of free space that you have in your bathroom. Because the freestanding tub will be accessible on all sides, the plumbing will need to be addressed. Most of the time in bathrooms, the plumbing is hidden. With a built-in tub, the option is easy; the plumbing is in the wall attached to the tub. With a freestanding tub, more consideration needs to be given. The plumbing could be below the tub, hidden in the flooring.

Material

It is important to determine the strength of the floor relative to the weight of the tub. Some materials available for tubs can be acrylic, stone, porcelain, fiberglass, copper, brass and cast iron. A cast iron tub will be considerably heavier than a fiberglass tub.

Placement of the tub is another factor. You can put the tub off to the side, possibly make a little alcove for it, or you can put the tub in the center of the room. This option might be decided better when you consider your design choices.

Design

Consider the shape of the tub you desire.  How does the shape fit into the current space available? Does it work as is, or do you need to make more room? Would you have the tub sit directly on the floor, or would you prefer to lift it by adding claw feet? Were you looking for an oval, square or round tub? These questions will help you figure out where best to place your tub in the room.

Colors

The color that you choose can depend on the material used for the tub. Other than that, you are limited only by your imagination. You can choose a matte color to complement your current color scheme or choose a bright color to draw the eye straight to the tub.
