You’ve decided that you want to remodel your bathroom. You have some ideas about changes you would like to make and are starting to think about the material you would like to use. You might have some patterns picked out or are trying to decide between granite or tile. There are other areas where you need to focus as well besides just pattern and placement. We will discuss some of them here.

Pipes

When you are thinking about a remodel is when you want to consider the current state of the pipes in your bathroom. If you are going to be ripping up the fixtures and changing them out, it is the perfect time to determine if your pipes need to be updated. There would be nothing worse than changing the sink or tub and realizing that your pipes were leaking the whole time. Then there could be floor or wall damage as a result. Or you realize the current pipes are not hardy enough for the fixtures that you would like to add.

Hot Water Needs

Another consideration to think about is what your hot water needs will be. Will you need to replace your hot water heater? Would you like to install a sink that offers the ability to have instant hot water available? Would you like a hot water heater that holds more water? Thinking about what you would like the hot water for will help you decide if your current set up is sufficient or if you need to modify anything to suit your needs.

Water Pressure

After reviewing your pipes to see if they need to be replaced, you should review the amount of pressure that runs through the pipes as well. Certain fixtures could require different amounts of pressure or your pipes could have been old and an update is needed. If you are considering multiple showerheads your pipes could need to be wider than they currently are. It is good to have a professional review your pipe and pressure needs.

Water Efficiency

Certain jurisdictions require that fixtures be updated to provide increased water efficiency from use. It is important when you are planning your remodel to know the laws of your jurisdiction to ensure that you are in compliance before the remodel is completed. Along with the fixtures, you should review if your piping or hot water heater need to become energy/water efficient as well.

Understanding the changes you want to make for your materials and colors, as well as knowing the local legal requirements for energy efficiency will help you to determine the cost and potential time frame for completing your remodel. By reviewing your current piping and amount of water pressure, you can increase the enjoyment you get from your new bathroom.
